Professionals working in patient safety and quality improvement roles need to have highly developed relational and communication skills. When incidents occur or opportunities for improvement arise, it is imperative to be able to have constructive and psychologically safe conversations with all those involved. A ‘command and control’ approach to leadership may sometimes be required, but overall, it does not foster positive cultures of open dialogue and collaborative improvement; a coaching approach does.
A coaching mindset and the critical skills of active listening, asking powerful questions, and saying what matters are required to successfully address safety and quality issues and opportunities. The coaching approach uses these skills to evoke discovery, awareness, insight, learning, behaviour change and choice in others.
Patient safety and quality leaders who use a coaching approach are far more likely to get positive staff engagement and trust in incident reviews and safety and quality improvement initiatives. Learning to be curious, non-judgmental and compassionate brings the required human element to safety and quality in healthcare and is sure to bring better outcomes for all involved.
The focus of the workshop is on the fundamentals of the coaching approach, the coaching mindset and the coaching skills of active listening, asking powerful questions and saying what matters. It will involve teaching as well as large and small group activities to practice the skills. You will have a chance to practice coaching and to be coached. Come prepared to discuss a challenge, struggle or opportunity that you are currently facing at work. For psychological safety, a commitment to confidentiality is expected.
The coaching mindset is a powerful internal belief that all people are creative, resourceful and whole. The mindset enables us to see others as ‘glorious opportunities’ and recognize that our role as leaders is to help others realize and use their talents to their fullest potential.
Active listening creates psychologically safe and trusting relationships and generates powerful questions that enable others to find their own answers, clarify pressing issues and take action. Active listening is essential for strong relationships, enabling people to feel seen, valued and heard, engaging with others in a positive way, and foundational for successful communication.
The ability to ask powerful questions creates safe and trusting relationships. Asking instead of telling gives power to others and informs them that you value and trust their opinions. Powerful questions evoke new insights, awareness and courses of action that were not previously in the open. Questions enable people to take responsibility and instill the confidence and clarity required to solve their own challenges.
Saying what matters builds self-esteem and confidence and helps normalize how others are feeling. This skill makes people feel seen, supported and able to stretch and grow.
