Summary

The Coordinator, Coding, coordinates coding and abstracting functions and provides supervision and professional practice leadership to staff responsible for clinical data processing that is used to meet operational, clinical, research, and educational needs. The Coordinator, Coding supervises a total staff of more than thirteen FTE(s) at multiple sites of the organizations. Provides information for new or allied services and contributes to operating and capital budget proposals, operational direction, organization, and quality assurance, and expertise and evaluation of staff. Duties also include participating in the development and implementation of quality improvement programs; participating in the development of HIM goals and objectives, and registration and records management policies and acting as the operational owner of the Discharge Abstract Database, BC Perinatal Database Registry and other databases residing in Coding.

Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of health information management.

Education

Graduation from an accredited Health Information Management Diploma or Bachelor Program. Six (6) years of recent, related experience , including two (2) years’ experience in a management/supervisory position, two (2) years’ experience in International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) coding, and one (1) year experience in data quality assurance management or data reporting analysis, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) Certified.

Duties

Plans and coordinates coding and abstracting functions at assigned site(s) by establishing working relationships with other departments, clinical programs, and medical staff and participating in the development of the HIM goals and objectives in conjunction with the Director and other HIM staff to ensure efficiency and cost effectiveness. Applies best practices consistent with industry and professional standards.

Assists the Director in the overall coordination of the HIM Coding team by performing duties such as providing information for new or allied services, contributing to operating and capital budget proposals including identifying, documenting and making recommendations to the Director regarding issues such as operating budget, workload, staff resources, minor and capital equipment purchases and space re-allocation; monitors and controls expenditures against approved budgets to ensure adherence to guidelines and reports variances to Director.

Provides operational direction, organization and data quality assurance by participating in the establishment of goals and objectives based on the goals and direction of HIM, and developing and monitoring site(s) specific standards, guidelines, policies/procedures and performance indicators. This includes implementation of external standards and guidelines such as mandated by the Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI) and the BC Ministry of Health (BCMoH).

Coordinates recruitment, orientation, and training through methods such as identifying vacancies, processing required internal paperwork, interviewing applicants and making recommendations to the Director for selection to maintain approved staff complement; and developing and implementing Coding education plans to continually develop staff skill and knowledge.
