This individual course also forms part of the Canadian Patient Safety Program.  

This course was developed in partnership with the Health Quality Council of Alberta (HQCA) and material has been sourced and adapted from learning materials from the three-day Human Factors in Healthcare course offered by HQCA, W21C, and the Alberta Health Services human factors team.

By the time you finish this course, you’ll have a better understanding of the importance of human factors and human factor engineering in the context of a dynamic and complex system, and the impact human factors design can have on the safety of those who work and are cared for within it. Learners will also practice evaluating usability by engaging real users to understand human factors challenges and potential improvement opportunities.

Prerequisites:
  • There are no prerequisites for this program, but a background in or active role in healthcare is recommended

Introduction to Human Factors in Healthcare 

  • Describe human factors and human factors engineering and their application to the healthcare system
  • Recognize safety incidents from a human factors perspective
  • Review the history of human factors
  • Recognize methods of evaluating human factors

Cognition, Cognitive Bias and Clinical Decision Making

  • Describe the types of human error that can occur and their impact on patient safety
  • Explore the impact human performance and human cognition has on patient safety incidents
  • Discuss the importance of cognitive biases and their impact on patient safety
  • Apply acquired knowledge of cognition and cognitive bias to clinical decision-making practices

Designing Safer Systems and Processes

  • Describe the hierarchy of effectiveness and each type of intervention
  • Describe factors that must be taken into consideration when designing information sources such as forms and labels
  • Identify poorly designed sources of information and explain how they could be improved
  • Recognize factors that are important in the design of digital interfaces and physical environments in healthcare

Human Factors Evaluation

  • Recognize methods of evaluating human factors
  • Explain how to use different evaluation methods to identify human factors issues and assess the effectiveness of solutions
  • Evaluate usability using a variety of possible techniques and metrics
