Jonas Shultz

Jonas Shultz is a Human Factors Specialist with the Health Quality Council of Alberta and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine. With more than 20 years of experience in healthcare human factors and patient safety, his work focuses on applying human factors principles to improve the safety, quality, usability, and design of healthcare systems and environments.

Throughout his career, Jonas has provided human factors expertise to healthcare organizations across Canada and internationally, including Alberta Health Services, Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, Health Canada, ISMP Canada, and the Center for Health Design. His work has addressed medication safety, medical device usability, healthcare facility design, simulation-based evaluation, patient safety investigations, and the design and comprehension of visual information.

At the Health Quality Council of Alberta, Jonas provides human factors expertise for provincial quality and safety reviews and initiatives. He authored the Simulation-based Mock-up Evaluation Framework, which provides guidance for evaluating healthcare environments and has informed provincial and national healthcare design standards. He has also served in patient safety leadership roles with Alberta Health Services and contributed human factors expertise to Health Canada guidance for safer medication labels and packaging.

Jonas holds a Master of Science in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology from the University of Calgary. His additional training includes Evidence-based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC), TeamSTEPPS Master Training, patient safety investigation, project management, and system and process failure mode and effects analysis.

In addition to his consulting and healthcare quality work, Jonas teaches and mentors healthcare professionals in patient safety and human factors through the University of Calgary. He has published his work in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to healthcare facility design standards and guidelines, and presented at national and international conferences.
